Keepin’ Up With Kimberley #8

Hello my lovelies! Man, this week has been rad so far! I’ve been having such a wonderful time and there’s so much to be getting on with. Here’s what I’m excited about lately and some updates on my adventures.

I got a beautiful little email this afternoon from Rethink Mental Illnesscropped-wpid-img_20150525_132636.jpg, saying that they are going to publish my post sometime next week! I’ll keep you informed when it is up on their page so you can check it out! It’s all about my experiences with anxiety and how it is possible to come out of the other side. It is possible to break through those barriers you feel you have ❤ I thought to share my experience so it could hopefully help some folk. Plus, I’m training for my fundraising with Rethink- so I’ll be posting up a JustGiving page real soon!

Plus some exciting news concerning my garment and goods brand Keep Real (follow on Twitter and Facebook). Designs are being finalised and selected for the brand new collection. I am so excited about these dotwork illustrations!! I able to tell you that the new collection will be called ‘Brotherhood/Sisterhood’.cropped-wpid-img_20150608_1012111.jpg It’s all about feeling real good, doing good and celebrating the bond we all have with each other. We all stand together. We shouldn’t be tearing our friends down or making other people feel bad because they are on different paths- we should be supporting each other and pushing ourselves and everyone around us to be the best they can be. We are part of a brother/sisterhood and collectively, we all have the ability to stay true to ourselves and be humble in our walks of life. We gotta keep real.

I will keep you all up to date with my ‘Keepin’ Up With Kimberley’ posts- so have those lovely eyes peeled in your inboxes or wordpress readers!

P.s it would be awesome if you could fill this quick poll in for my blog ❤ Sending you all the love and posi vibes!

Helloooo lovely people! Sorry for the lack of posts- but it was my 21st birthday yesterday (woo!). So I’ve been out celebrating the last few days and spending time with the family. Very blessed to say the least ❤ wpid-img_20150711_092915.jpg

So apart from that what have I been up to!? I submitted a piece for Time To Change as a ‘StoryShort’ which is a little post about my experiences with mental health. My little post may be up at the tail end of Summer, so I’ll keep you posted on that! I think it’s important to share such things, as even an experience like mine could help someone feel not so alone. Anxiety used to be quite a big part of my life in college, but now I feel more confident than ever. Mindfulness has helped a lot, if you’re feeling a bit stressed or find it hard to calm down your day- check out Frantic World.comIt’s a simple form of meditation that can make you feel wonderful inside and out.

With Keep Real, the designs have kicked into overdrive lately, and it’s been such a wonderful experience seeing the collection come together in quite an unexpected way. My style has definitely come through, I am so pleased with the outcome. I have a lot of planning to do, but the designs are grounded and are 80% ready to go! After I’ve posted this, I will be taking down the online store so I can focus on building up a rad as hell site.

Also with kimmykeepfit, I have been planning my runs and exercise to really go for it. It’s been quite hard lately with the weather, as well as my celebrations too! But it’s important to be patient and be kind to myself. Incorporating mountain bike riding will also help. I used to go mountain bike riding quite a lot in my early teens, so my Dad has offered to go with me as he’s so passionate about it himself. I love how my family push me to do whatever I set my mind to!

Anyway, that’s it for now! I hope this post finds you well.

working on a commission this week!

Hello lovelies! Man it’s been a crazy week. I have just one week left until I move out of Huddersfield to go back home after the University life!

I’ve been working on a real cool commission for a living room piece (pictured). It’s right up my alley with the whole botanical/mandala vibes going on. It’s become more intricate than I initially thought, but I cannot wait to finish it! Soooo many detailllsss!

There’s so much to look forward to, I have my 21st coming up near the beginning of July then I have my graduation! It only hit me yesterday I don’t have much time left. Student life over- now I gotta get ready for new beginnings!

Speaking of new beginnings, I want to congratulate my dear friend Ayshe- who got ENGAGED this week!!! I can’t believe she will be getting married! I wish her all the wpid-img_20150617_181808.jpghappiness in the world- it was lovely to hang out and catch up after quite a while ❤

This week has ended up being quite an emotional one for me. It’s a fairly overwhelming experience to finish my degree in Counselling Therapy and move onwards. Looking back into the year with working two jobs, finishing a degree, working on Keep Real amongst other things all at the same time, it’s just unbelievable how far I’ve come personally. I work hard to get by, to follow my passions alongside a degree and two jobs. I have become more resilient and determined to get where I want to be.

There is so much more to explore and do! I cannot wait to share with you more adventures and happenings with Keep Real!

So much love to you all ❤

So it’s official, kimmykeepreal.com! ❤

I’ve been designing away and getting down and dotty (heh) with my artwork. Really focusing on key pieces to bring to the collection, from t-shirts and crop tops to notebooks and accessories. At this stage, its all about the grafting and wwpid-img_20150525_132636.jpgorking on finding the right materials and fit for all you guys and gals. Patience is a virtue at this point, so I wanna be 112% happy with the overall outcome of Keep Real’s first positive goods collection.

Last years collection when I first started Keep Real, was just a tester to figure out what products and designs I could ultimately create (you can have a peek at some existing products that are now on sale here!). In my mindset, I wanted to give back with some of the products, such as giving 10% of each art print sold to Mind, the mental health charity here in the UK. I am still working towards raising money and awareness for mental health. This is so important to the Keep Real brand! Promoting a healthy relationship with yourself and others is key to Keepin’ It Real ❤

As well as designing the new collection, I also got another design by the amazing Niall Shannon tattooed! Bit of a celebration of finishing my degreewpid-img_20150523_184438.jpg and working so hard. The moth is a wonderful symbol of the soul and its transforming course. It follows the light, and that is where my journey goes too. I just knew I had to get this! A wonderful end to three years and a new beginning.

I’ve had a crazy week of working, designing and seeing some beautiful people. I’m ready for another wonderful week and I hope you are too. Let’s do this!

Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.- Arthur Ashe

Artwork Adventures (New Collection!)

Firstly, Happy Women’s Day folks! It’s lovely to see the achievements of women around the world. If you’d like to take a look at how far we’ve come- click the link here for a timeline all the way back to 1908! Such an inspiring day!

Feeling empowered, I thought to finish off some artwork that has been taking a back seat while I’ve been writing my dissertation. Oh the woes of a final year University student! Alas, if you have a passion- you’re going to do everything you can to get where you want to be. So this Sunday, amongst all my research papers, I have completed some designs.

I’ve started using the Micron Pens (which you can find here on Amazon) which have yet to disappoint me at all! I’d go so far as to say they are the best pens I’ve used. Plus I have the ailment (especially when it comes to sketching and art) of being left-handed. So you get the annoyance of smudging quite a lot, but these pens satisfy my needs. If you’re wanting to start dotwork illustration or need good pens for fine or thick lines- Micron is your best bet.

The reason for finishing some pieces is the fact that I’m designing a new collection for Keep Real (eep!IMG_20150308_161125). For a sneak peek, here’s the mandala I’ve just completed. Notice the tiny moths within it! It’s my favourite mandala so far within the collection, I cannot wait to get started on more ideas. I haven’t given away the theme of it, but the mandala is a slight giveaway. But not too much of one!

I would absolutely LOVE some feedback from my followers on it. If you haven’t checked out my Instagram, please do. I post most of my artwork up on there and give little previews!

My Dream: The ‘Keep Real’ Store

So, as some of you lovely people may know- I run my own small business I set up last year called ‘Keep Real‘. Providing goods and illustration to all who seek a positive place. At the tail end of 2014, I had the delight of being interviewed by an independent magazine website called ‘Sheffield Unchained’ where they stated very accurately, ‘Kimberley decided to combine interests in design, illustration and mental health with the launch of what she terms a ‘positive illustration and goods movement’, which is less about selling objects and more about promoting meaning and positive messages.’

I couldn’t havIMG_20140405_141826e put it better myself. I want to create a store that people can just hang out at and shop. No rushing in, no rushing out if you don’t want to. You wanna sit and talk to your friends about your day? Do it. You wanna buy a present for a relative, and hang out on the sofas reading a book? Do it.

There aren’t enough places when you’re shopping, to make you feel like you’re welcome to stay as long as it pleases you. ‘If you’re going to stay, you have to buy something’. I don’t want that bullshit for you. Shopping is hard enough, then when you want to rest you feel you have to go to a coffee shop just DSCN0014to sit down and take a time out. So you have to pay extortionate amounts for your Americano, which you didn’t really want in the first place. If you’re gonna hang at Keep Real, just throw your loose change into a jar- where it contributes to raising money to Mental Health Charities. Just don’t abuse the freedom (I’m flattered that you wanna stay from 9am til 5pm but really? really?!)

I have so many ideas with Keep Real, creating a positive environment for all you individuals out there. They’ll be sofas, throws and chairs around, where they’ll be loads of books that you can just pick up and read. Artwork on the walls for sale, clothes, accessories, bags, prints and homeware.

Shopping is hard enough, then when you want to rest you feel you have to go to a coffee shop just to sit down and take a time out. So you have to pay extortionate amounts for your Americano, which you didn’t really want in the first place.

Who knows what the future holds for it, but after I graduate- that’s where I will make my dreams come true (ultimate corny thing to say, right?). ‘Staying True’ and ‘Keeping Real’ are the traditional sayings that prove a foundation for what I really want to create. It will happen, I just can’t wait to see where it takes me and who follows the journey with me.

a hobbit’s festivities

So, the unwrapping of presents is over- and the leftovers are out.

In which case, my family here in Yorkshire (all with the average height of 5”3) are eating at breakfast, second breakfast, elevensies, luncheon, afternoon tea, dinner and supper. The hobbit eating times if you haven’t guessed!

I feel extremely thankful for all my gifts this year. I didn’t ask for anything in particular, but my plans for next year are the main reason why. Keep Real, as Yorkshire’s Positive Goods Movement- will be opening as a high street store in the near future. Which means I will probably get vouchers for B&Q and stock up on supplies for the shop in future festivites (oh the joy of DIY). I want to make a place where everyone can feel at home, as well as somewhere they can have a browse of the walls, books and clothing that will be available. They’ll be sofa’s, armchairs and throws where people can hang out, as well as shop. (If you haven’t already- go ‘like’ the facebook page! click here) I’m looking forward to the preparation of opening my own Store, it is extremely early days yet!

We have the tradition as a family to watch ‘A Muppet’s Christmas Carol’ every Christmas Eve. We normally play the video (Yes…a video!!) and consume copious amounts of either Gin, Honey Rum or Sweet Cider. A glorious evening for the Robinson’s. We also have next door’s cat creeping in (see below, she looks right at home!)

Anyway, I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and that you are all looking forward to the New Year.

Plus I hope no one was disappointed with any of their presents!!

Interview and the Art of Wandering Aimlessly

On Monday, I travelled to my home city of Sheffield for a wonderful interview by an independents focused magazite/website called Sheffield Unchained‘. I met up with a lovely lady called Tricia at the Blue Moon Cafe, which is opposite the cathedral in the centre of town (they do fantastic vegetarian and vegan food- click here to check them out!).

By talking about Keep Real and the aims I have with it, it really opened my eyes to what I really want to do. So if you’d like, you can check out the interview which has been published today! It is featured on their front page, so I am extremely humbled and proud about it! So have a look at Keep Real – The Interview. woo!!

After the interview, I got the chance to look around the recent Exhibitions over at the Millennium Gallery and the Ruskin Collection. I’ve been dying to take a real look, as it feels like I never get the chance to when I visit Sheffield. Ruskin is actually quite an inspiration for me with his ‘connection between nature and art’. I actually have a really old hardback book of Ruskin’s titled ‘Sesame and Lilies and Unto This Last’. So it was really beautiful to take my time looking around the exhibition.

I then ventured through town (having stopped off at Sheffield’s German Christmas Market for a huge lamb and mint burger), to see my Auntie’s Art Studio. However, I nearly forgot the way and just wandered around aimlessly until this wonderful chap called Nathan- who I learned to be studying Computing something-or-other at the University of- showed me the way, having noticed I looked utterly lost. Had a fleeting conversation with him before we parted ways through the city. Wherever you are Nathan- thank you for being cool!

Finally I met up with my Auntie Bekah, which is always insanely badass. I see her as my big sister, so we always have a good natter. Her art studio is so beautiful too, two rooms of just craft goodness- and a loom!

Anyway, after my long day I just felt truly blessed. Sometimes, you need to hear someone else’s views of what you’re doing to truly understand what your aims are. Plus, wandering around my home city felt so natural. Being in my own company used to be so daunting- but I now feel I can hold my head high and do whatever I set my mind to. IMG_20141201_115908 IMG_20141201_120113 IMG_20141202_201628 IMG_20141202_205011

An Introduction

So hi!

I think an introduction is order, as this is my first blog, everrr.

I am Kimberley Robinson, a twenty year old residing in Yorkshire, England. Lover of hardback books, vinyl and many a brew to plunder my way through life.

Currently, I am in the my final year of University studying Counselling Therapy, with two part-time jobs (one in a music store which is so radddd, and another in Boots-also cool!) and the owner of a small business called Keep Real

Now, being excruciatingly busy- finding time to set Keep Real up this year in 2014, probably sounds pretty much impossible and bordering on the delusional. However,  as crazy it may seem (‘like where the hell do you find the time to do something like that!?) it’s honestly something I am so passionate about.

The ol’ tale of ‘staying true’ and ‘keeping it real’ are the foundations of trying to stay positive,  and being true to who you are as a person. Keep Real aims to remind folk that being that, is exactly what is important. None of the bullshit, just be you. It is early stages yet but my passion remains…well, shall we say a ‘beacon of light’.

So to conclude, this blog is about what I’m up to day to day/ weekly. Following the life and adventures of Kimberley Robinson/ Keep Real as a hopeful movement in creating something positive that people will enjoy as much as I do!
