Self Love

It’s so much easier to love other people, than to love ourselves. It sucks, but it’s true. Unconditional love is a complete and whole love without limitations. Accepting ourselves is so important, and unconditional love comes from within, before we can completely and  unconditionally love others. Go with your gut, trust yourself and accept all of the things that make up who you are as a person (that’s your bad habits and flaws too!). Remember, your body is a beautiful thing. It heals you without any conscious thought. You’re here breathing, and moving your eyes along the screen. Feeling comfortable in your own skin is difficult, but important to your wellness. We always pick out our flaws as a person, then cannot understand why others do not see them as strongly as we do, if at all. For example, If I’m worried about my skin, or a bad habit I have- my friends seem baffled. I think a lovely way to the journey of self love is the saying ‘treat yourself how you would treat your best friend’. We all have days where we’re not so confident in ourselves, and feel uncomfortable in our bodies. It’s ok. Who is 100% happy with themselves all of the time? No one. Treat yourself with kindness, and the world will bring it back to you in abundance. Be gentle, you’re doing so well already ❤

We need to feel secure in ourselves, so it’s that little bit easier to not rely on others for happiness. If we constantly look to others for acceptance, how will we truly learn to love ourselves? We need to seek it within, so loving becomes such a wonderful and rad thing.

Mental Health Is A Part Of Us All- Yes, Us All!

We have physical health, and we have mental health. It should be quite simple, right? Well, it feels like common sense- that our health is us as a whole, that we need to take care of our bodies and minds as one. Then how come mental health isn’t spoken about as much? Sometimes our mental health even comes with physical symptoms. Chest pains, loss of appetite, migraines, fatigue etc. It’s all linked, and our mind controls everything too! Ever get a tummy pain or a headache, and the more you think about how much it hurts- the more you feel it hurting somehow? When we focus on our pains or aches with our thoughts, the more our pains and aches control our thinking, our ability to concentrate and even our mobility as a person. Well, it all loops back to our thoughts and our mental state. This is our mental health. Whether you know it or not, you have mental health. Just like we all breathe in oxygen, have bones, skin, as well as blood flowing through our veins. It’s a part of us, and we have to take care of it.

Having a healthy mind is just as important as a health body

The next time you see someone in the street, or on their way to work, even in your workplace- just remember they have mental health. We aaallll have mental health! You are not alone, we all go through something- and you deserve to be ok. Every single person on this big huge rock we call our home has a mental state, even if we don’t talk about it. Our health is part of us all, whether we can see it or not.

Keeping’ Up With Kimberley – Progress and Procrastination

Hey you wonderful soul, how are you today? Thought I’d do a little personal post about what I’m up to. What a ramble I have for you!

I woke up early for a driving lesson, and started my day plotting and scheming for my business. I feel like I keep talking about my brand Keep Real far too much for my good- but I don’t necessarily share that much about it. I talk about it too much in my own little head, and realise that I’m not being productive!

After two years of saving up while at University, I finally purchased a MacBook Pro for my work yesterday. TheApple-logo-grey-880x625 software wasn’t up to scratch on my old laptop, and for the work/business I will be doing, it was time for an upgrade. It feels so good to spend my money on
something as wonderful as this (yes, I’m typing away on it as you read!). After all the hard work on my two part time jobs while studying for my degree, paying bills, paying rent etc- I saved up small amounts throughout the year. After something like this, it puts into perspective where your hard earned pennies go. Who needs clothes, make up or more pairs of Vans? Not me!

Now I have the right kit to work on, I finally feel like I can be more efficient with my time, and to get my head together. Since Christmas, it’s been quite a struggle for me to get going with Keep Real. So purchasing this, has put me into gear.

I’m still working on my  presentation for the Charlie Waller Memorial Trust, which is next Monday! Exciting stuff!! I also sent my final design to Heads Above The Waves for the Keep Real Collaboration. Also extremely exciting stuff!

I’ve also been reading an incredibly motivating book which I’m sure quite a few people have heard of, called ‘#GIRLBOSS’ by Sophia Amoruso  which has really helped me to take control of my negative thoughts about setting up my business. I cannot sing enough praises about this book. Thank you Sophia. Man. With the right determination, things will work out. Leave the negative folk behind, and the people that don’t push you to be the best version of yourself. Work hard, play hard. Focussing too much, can sometimes lead to a blurry goal. I just gotta keep at it, and not expect so much of myself all the time. A downfall I have to work on!

Winter Blues – How To Beat It!

Hey folks! I hope this post finds you well! It’s been a week or so since my last post- but I have much planned to fill this blog up with some lil’ tips and posts full of mental wellness and motivation!

It’s mid November already! Can you believe it?! Most folk struggle more with their mental health (as well as physical too!) in the winter months. However, despite this ongoing problem that quite a lot of us experience, with a mild form of ‘winter blues’, some of us also experience SAD this time of year. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD, or otherwise known as summertime sadness or seasonal depression) is a form of depression that here in the UK, is said to affect about 1 in 15 people. There are many forms of depression, which can find here on Rethink. Symptoms for SAD generally appear between September and November, and continue until March or April, when there may be a sudden burst of energy and activity wpid-img_20151022_220531.jpgaccompanying the longer, brighter spring and summer days. Symptoms can include lethargy, loss of concentration, sleep problems, anxiety and social problems (please find more information over at the Mental Health Foundation)

We all feel down now and then, but winter for some can be quite a difficult time, with or without a diagnosed mental health problem. We all have to take care of ourselves the best we can ❤ Here are 3 key tips to keep you going, and to cope with the longer days and colder nights
. Be safe folks, and stay well.

  1. Try get outside in the daylight if you can. Even if its that small lunch break at work, soak up as much natural daylight as possible. If not outside, sit near the windows if possible and chose colours in your room that are pale to reflect light from outside. ❤
  2. Keep warm. Wrap yourself up with all your jumpers, scarves and hats- like the warmest little burrito possible! Hot drinks and food will also fill that wonderful tummy up of yours. Whether that be hot chocolate, green tea, broths, soups- you name it! Eat up and stay snug.
  3. Stay active. I know it’s cold and very chilly on the bones- but you gotta move about! Whether that be running up and down the stairs a few times, doing yoga, going for a walk round your house, or doing some stretches. One hour’s walk in the middle of the day can be just as helpful as light treatment or therapy.

The Art of Happiness

But we are working for that purely on the basis of hope. So, we need to make the best use of our time. So, let us reflect what is truly of value in life, what gives meaning to our lives, and set our priorities on the basis of that. The purpose of our life needs to be positive. We weren’t born with the purpose of causing trouble, harming others. For our life to be of value, I think we must develop basic good human qualities—warmth, kindness, compassion. Then our life becomes meaningful and more peaceful—happier.”

Today, I thought to review some of my favourite #ElleInspire articles so far. I’m an avid reader and subscriber to Elle Magazine here in England, and what I love most are the #ElleInspire articles in there (and of course, the fashion!)- it gives the readers a wonderful sense of empowerment, with an authentic look at self esteem and confidence in women. It aint’ just a fashion magazine. Elle is a wonderful monthly read for not only the fashion forward, but forward thinkers too.

Throughout the year, we’ve seen movements in feminism, sexuality and gay marriage. 2015 has definitely been the year for shifting the world in an era of openness and change. We’ve seen the HeForShe Campaign fronted by the beautiful Emma Watson forELLE-UK-May-2015-Cover-Rebel-Wilson-Main gender equality, Gay Marriage being legalised nationwide in the US plus legalisation in Ireland, and the sexuality movement of ‘fluidity’ and the rejection of labels. What an age to be living in huh?!

February’s issue of Elle noted Elizabeth Palmer as ‘Woman of the Month’, recognising her as an inspirational Journalist who has covered nearly every major conflict zone in Europe and the Middle East. She tells readers to follow their natural ability, and shares her story of not having a definite road. It inspires, and she is a perfect example of ambition and making your own luck. You can do it too!

May’s issue of Elle fronted the ever wonderful Rebel Wilson with the hashtag #BeMoreRebel frontier. An intelligent, body confident woman who is ridiculously funny. Now who wouldn’t want her on the front page?! She has worked her butt off to get to where she wants be (with a Degree in Law & Arts and a former Rotary International Youth Ambassador for Australia) and there aint no stopping her! Like Elle quotes, ‘She is proof that hard work pays off and proof that once you find your voice, you can keep it and make it work for you.’

June’s issue of Elle noted Elaine West as ‘Woman of the Month’, who is the first woman to be promoted to the rank of Air Vice-Marshal, the most senior ranking female officer in the British Armed Forces. Her interview is a lovely one to read, that when things don’t go your way, move forward and learn from your experiences. She worked her way through the ranks, having been in 19 different roles throughout her career and kept going ❤

October’s issue of Elle fronts Miley Cyrus, and the exploration of sexuality and ‘gender fluidity’. It alsojIyfRftH has a beautiful spread of ’30 smart women under 30′. Now, it aint just the academically smart, it’s the downright empowering- women are out there getting to where they want to be and from all various backgrounds and childhoods. You, yes you, are the same. YOU can achieve whatever you dream, inspire and create. If you truly want it, you can go and get it ❤ It’s ok to doubt yourself, it’s natural to feel overwhelmed or afraid. But if you want it, make it happen.

2015 has been an incredible year for women, and for everyone so far. What a beautiful and moving year, and so many months ahead that could bring such joy to the world! Even though sometimes when you read these magazines, it is so easy to say ‘I wish I could be like that’, ‘I wish I was her’ and ‘Why don’t I look like that?’. However, there are such lovely articles in there saying to women all over the world ‘Stop comparing yourself to the pages, because being you is inspiring in itself and you can be whatever you want to be’.

I think we need more of that in this world. When we start comparing, we get so caught up in it and steals all our self-worth. You are beautiful…yes I’m talking to you! Be kind to yourself and do your own thaang. I believe in you.

Feeling Rad and Bad is Valid

All these techniques I talk about such as mindfulness, relaxation and wellness essentials, it is so so important to remember that it is ok to have bad days. Allow yourself to feel whatever you feel. Being a person, made up of all those atoms means you are a fluid being. We have all kinds of emotions, thoughts and feelings- so half of them are bound to make is feel sad, angry, hateful and heartbroken ❤ P.s If you haven’t checked out my blog post for Rethink Mental Illness, please do! Keepin’ Up With Kimberley #8

Hello my lovelies! Man, this week has been rad so far! I’ve been having such a wonderful time and there’s so much to be getting on with. Here’s what I’m excited about lately and some updates on my adventures.

I got a beautiful little email this afternoon from Rethink Mental Illnesscropped-wpid-img_20150525_132636.jpg, saying that they are going to publish my post sometime next week! I’ll keep you informed when it is up on their page so you can check it out! It’s all about my experiences with anxiety and how it is possible to come out of the other side. It is possible to break through those barriers you feel you have ❤ I thought to share my experience so it could hopefully help some folk. Plus, I’m training for my fundraising with Rethink- so I’ll be posting up a JustGiving page real soon!

Plus some exciting news concerning my garment and goods brand Keep Real (follow on Twitter and Facebook). Designs are being finalised and selected for the brand new collection. I am so excited about these dotwork illustrations!! I able to tell you that the new collection will be called ‘Brotherhood/Sisterhood’.cropped-wpid-img_20150608_1012111.jpg It’s all about feeling real good, doing good and celebrating the bond we all have with each other. We all stand together. We shouldn’t be tearing our friends down or making other people feel bad because they are on different paths- we should be supporting each other and pushing ourselves and everyone around us to be the best they can be. We are part of a brother/sisterhood and collectively, we all have the ability to stay true to ourselves and be humble in our walks of life. We gotta keep real.

Mental Wellness Essentials #2

Hello you! I hope the week so far has been good to you! It’s the middle of the week (or there abouts!), so here’s some mental wellness essentials to get you through ❤

Sometimes the beginning of the week can mega drag. First day back to work or whatever you’re getting up to, has that feel about it- you just wish for a day in bed! Keep that head up you, it’s gonna be ok ❤

Let’s start with some little tips to maintain your flow for the week.

  • Eat well – Food, as tasty as it comes- can improve how you feel! I’m not telling you knock back some weird tea, only eat salad or buy organic; eating well does have it’s benefits. The more colour with your meals, the better. Takeaways and quick microwave meals are, let’s face it, the lazy way to fill that lovely tummy of yours. Try get out of the habit and go for something new. If you fancy cooking up a quick little storm, I suggest signing up to ‘Thug Kitchen’- great recipes via email…and vegan too! Find some recipes here.
  • Ask for help – It feels tricky to admit that you might need a hand, but there is no harm in it. wpid-img_20150805_201214.jpgIf you do not ask, you shall not receive. It’s as simple as that. Pluck up the courage to seek some guidance or ask a friend for help. Take a well deserved break and ring up a loved one to have a chat.
  • Be a lil’ bit selfish! – You’re here, you’re breathing- it’s your life and you can do whatever you wish with it! Eat that bar of chocolate…go on! Do something for yourself out of your day. It doesn’t just have to be work, eat, sleep and repeat. Catch that film you wanna see, ask a friend out for a drink- do what makes you happy. You can spread that happiness with others too ❤ take that break!
  • Meditate – Some may think it’s quite the hippy thing to do, and over-think the whole meditation/ mindfulness way of relaxation, but taking 10 minutes out of your day to focus on yourself, can really improve how you feel about your day. Sit comfortably, relax your body and place your hands where you feel is natural. Close your eyes, count your breath in ‘1’ and breath out ‘2’- right up to 10. Repeat this and just notice what’s going on for you in your body. Slight headache? Bit of tension in your shoulders? Whatever it is, just notice it. Be gentle with yourself. Sometimes your body tells you things when you are a bit stressed. Listen to body.
